- While thinking about your personal values, think about your ideal life or your ideal relationship and answer this question: What is the vision of your ideal? That vision is what we have helped people and couples achieve. In the beginning, their goals sounded like this:
- I want to better be aware of myself, know who I am, and appreciate my individuality.
- We want to find ways to communicate better.
- I need to balance my family with my work.
- I want to dedicate more time to my children before it is too late. Strengthen my relationship with my teenagers even though they aren't really "into" me right now.
- We want to feel more complete. We want mental and spiritual "wellness."
- I want to improve my relationship with my spouse in a fun way.
- I want to live like it matters.
- We need to escape together and rekindle the spark.
- I need to make a better connection. I feel disconnected.
- Something has got to change. We need motivation.
- We just need to get away and relax together while we figure things out again. We hope it isn't too late to write a mission statement or something. We think that might help.
- As you can see, many of these original “goals” identify a problem but are not actually specific goals. We find out exactly what these statements mean to you. You might ask yourself, "What would a 'better relationship' look like to me?" Or, "What would I be telling myself if I was more connected to my values?" Or, "How will I know when I feel more complete?" The specific answers are the goals that we help people reach. To learn what you might want to talk to us about take these assessments or see the question: "As a personal coach, what can you do for my life?"
- How can a couples retreat specifically help my relationship?
- Take a moment to pause. Imagine that you are sitting on top of a sun-warmed towel on a soft sandy beach. Maybe you can hear the seagulls in the distance, but they are drowned out by the repetitive waves of the salty ocean. You look past the white foam on the beach as you gaze into the various shades of the blue ocean, and wave after soothing wave, your mind drifts away.... Now, as you imagine this scene, shift your attention to how you are feeling. Even simply thinking of this imaginary "Retreat" may make you feel different. With focus, you may be able to take that feeling with you whenever you need it, wherever you are.
- Similarly, a Couples Retreat "Voyage" helps your relationship "get away from it all," allowing your relationship to gain something valuable without your ordinary distractions. Our "Voyages," like a "heroes journey," first call you away from where you are, then give you experiences to learn skills and useful wisdom, so that you return with something useful--a new perspective, a skill, wisdom, an accomplishment, a desired feeling, or a resourceful state--something that can only be obtained by accepting your call to go on the journey.
- Specifically, Couples Retreat "Voyages" are preventative and future focused. We help couples effectively reach their goals before a situation becomes problematic and therapy is needed. We also celebrate with satisfied couples that want to be even more loving, purposeful and happy in their relationship. You don't need to limit yourself to these lists - you may have your own specific goals you want to accomplish that we can easily discuss.

Experiential Activity Coaching
- How are Experiential Activities different than just going scuba diving or hiking or something?
- Core Voyage has the added advantage of using our natural environment through horses, SCUBA diving, and various simple/low-impact wilderness activities to utilize nature's dynamic, living, and powerful properties. Those familiar with the experience of using nature to gain wisdom or knowledge can also see how nature-guided Experiential Activities can create an opportunity to develop the resourceful states needed to accomplish your specific goals and find creative solutions to your obstacles. And according to the Association for Experiential Education:
- Carefully chosen experiences are structured to require people to take initiative, make decisions and be accountable for results.
- Throughout the experiential learning process, people are actively engaged in posing questions, investigating, experimenting, being curious, solving problems, assuming responsibility, being creative, and constructing meaning.
- Experiential Activities encourage spontaneous opportunities for learning and include the possibility to learn from natural consequences, mistakes and success.
- The results of the learning are personal.
- Opportunities are nurtured to explore and examine personal values.
- Relationships (with others, self, and natural world) are developed and nurtured.
- What are some examples of how Experiential Activities have been helpful to others?
- Incredible for Skills Training and Development. Experiential Activities require you to apply certain skills. Some examples include: Non-verbal communication, assertiveness, relationship boundaries, creative thinking and problem-solving, cooperation and teamwork, leadership, work, taking responsibility, strengthening relationships, confidence, and attitude.
- Reframing or Paradigm Shifting. Your personal life experiences have made you who you are today. As the most powerful teacher, new learning experiences are effective at changing your perspective, attitude, or behavior. Experiential Activities help you initiate and practice these changes and show you how to turn challenges or obstacles into learning and growth opportunities.
- When words aren't working. Sometimes our perspectives, thoughts, feelings, or opinions aren't easily described. Either words have not yet labeled these things, or there aren't words to adequately describe them. The same is true about the solutions to our goals. These activities stimulate all the senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch to motivate you with a full sense of your objectives and can help you answer questions like: What is "the smell of victory?" Can't you just "taste it?" Can you "feel it coming?" What will you be "telling yourself" when you reach all your goals? How will you know when you accomplish your "vision?"
- Freeing and Achieving Resourceful States. Activities help you find the resources within yourself. Some examples of resourceful states that may help you reach your goals are: enthusiasm, confidence, decision-making, high energy, fascination, curiosity, interest, courage, determination, and certainty. William Glasser says, "If you want to change attitudes, start with a change in behavior." Your attitude runs your "engine," and it is within you to free new resourceful attitudes to motivate action.
- Solutions and Possibilities. There is no "one way" or "right way" to reach the objectives in an Experiential Activity. You can find "your way," and that is the best way! Experimenting, being curious, solving problems, assuming responsibility, and being creative during the activity gives you the ability to seek solutions and think of new possibilities.
- Strengthening Relationships. Whether you come alone, with your partner, or with your family or family member, you can discover the skills you feel you lack or develop new purposeful memories to cherish in an extremely effective learning environment. Our carefully selected experiential activities are rich with opportunities to connect, discover, and learn. You can learn to associate healthy activities with your relationship.
- What kinds of activities strengthen relationship trust?
- Developing relationship trust is only one of many ways we use experiential activites. Here are a few specific activity examples to give you an idea of how powerful Experiential Activities can be with an "experience" coach as your guide. Let’s imagine you are underwater SCUBA diving, and somehow your tank malfunctions. "Buddy breathing" is a basic skill taught in SCUBA certification, but think of the rich metaphor this activity can have to strengthen your relationship trust. This experience can help you understand what is involved in learning to trust your partner to help you with things that really matter in your life.
- Now imagine that you are on a nature-walk in a place you have never been. You are blindfolded and cannot speak, while your partner can see but cannot speak or touch you. The only way to get to your destination is to work together in a new way. After this experience, you may have new insight to the answers to these questions: Where do you see this metaphorically in your relationship? How can you learn to communicate trust in a "new way?" Can you trust in each other's strengths to get you to where you need to go?
- Finally, in many areas, there may not be a tree or a fence to tie your horse, so you learn how to do what is called a "ground tie." This is where you lay the lead rope from the halter on the ground and your horse stays around as if it is "tied." Your objective in this activity is to "ground-tie" your horse and walk around your horse as many times as you feel comfortable without letting the horse take off and run away. What types of feelings would you imagine experiencing while you were developing trust in your "ground tie?" Who or what could this represent in your life? How can this experiential metaphor help you know what to do in your relationship to strengthen trust?

- Better interaction with your family is inherent in these carefully chosen experiences, but even if the activity "bombs," you have a professional guide that can help improve your interaction, if that is your goal. Most importantly, these kinds of experiences help you to learn to associate healthy activities with your relationships.

- You can read as many self-help books as you want, but eventually they will gather dust just like all the rest. Personal Life Coaches are more than a book of knowledge; they are someone to be accountable to. - What is the difference between a coach and counselor?
- Coaching is not therapy. The coach believes that you are creative, resourceful, and whole. The Mental Health Counselor is trained to diagnose and treat mental illness and must be properly licensed in the state they practice. People see a therapist to fix or eliminate their problem, people see a coach to help themselves get more out of their lives or create new possibilities. Although coaching does not deal with diseases of the mind or body, coaching does help with "dis-ease", dissatisfaction, personal issues, self-worth, and inability to achieve desired goals. And, finally, where a therapist will be interested in the past, coaches focus on the present and future. All of Core Voyage's services are very therapeutic; however, Coaching, Experiential Activities, and Couples Retreat "Voyages" are not therapy. - Are coaches mentors or consultants?
- Many people don't know that coaches are also different than mentors or consultants. Mentors are someone in your field of interest that you look up to, receive guidance from, and aspire to be like. A Personal Life Coach can be like a mentor, but a Life-Coach specifically focuses on what you need to reach your goals. A consultant is someone that has the "corner of the market" on information on a topic. They are the source of education for you and have expertise in a specific area. They are often considered "the expert." Life-Coaches are more like a partner on your journey to success and they know that everything you need to succeed is within you.
- What exactly happens during a normal coaching call? The "protocol?"
- Coaching usually takes place over the phone once a week or once every other week--whatever works best for you. You will call your Personal Life-Coach at an arranged time. You need to sign the Coaching and Payment Agreement and complete an Email us to get your intake packet before your first coaching session. Generally, in your initial free consultation our Life-Coaches will inquire to see how you want to design your future in all areas of your life. We will find out where you are right now, what your current aims are, and how your aims apply to your core values. If you don't know your core values, we will take some time to establish what those are. In every session we remember your aims and values, but you decide what you want coaching on.
- Our Life-Coaches use "Power Questions" during the session as we listen for your unique style and strengths. With your permission, your coach may challenge some of what you say and then assist you in tapping into your own resourceful states—in order to minimize the impact of obstacles and maximize your ability to reach the results you want.
- Your coach may propose "requests" or give you some "structures" to help you overcome any obstacles and more completely achieve your goal, but you can adjust, accept or decline any "requests" or "structures" as you see fit. The session ends with "Action Strategies" so that you will know the commitment you have made for yourself and what to reward yourself when you have accomplished your commitment.
- During the course of coaching, you can expect to experience ups and downs, plateus and feeling "stuck," but these are all part of growth and the coaching process. Fill out any of these assessments or contact us to let us know you want to begin coaching.
- How much contact do I have with the coach?
- Coaching calls occur over the phone and usually last about an hour. You decide whether coaching calls are arranged once every week or once every other week. A short call or email between sessions is permitted for various reasons. Usually emails work perfectly for communicating specific accomplishments before the next session. Face-to-face sessions are usually only during Couples Retreat “Voyages” or Experiental Activities.

- Okay, this isn't a "frequently asked" question, but I'm answering it here because I want you to know that I welcome any question you have. I believe that every question should be first answered with "Good question." Try it with your family, especially the seemingly simple questions, and you'll likely find that, over time, it will help them see that they can really ask you anything.
- So, the answer? Whatever color they choose! Doing better in school has less to do with the color of their room and more to do with being comfortable and happy at home--especially feeling your support. Maybe you can give them some options, but imagine what it would be like to have the most important adult in your life--your parent--ask your opinion and then support you! Who knows, that canary-yellow they pick may not be your favorite, but perhaps they know what they need more than you think.
